Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People?

Aug 23, 2026    Dr. Jason Kennedy

What do we do when life falls apart despite our best efforts to live rightly? That question sits at the heart of one of the oldest and most searching books in the entire Bible -- the book of Job. We explore the story of a man who had everything: a complete family, extraordinary wealth, and a reputation for righteousness so thorough that he even offered sacrifices on behalf of sins his children might have committed in their hearts. And yet, in what feels like a devastating and disorienting sequence of events, everything is stripped away. What makes the book of Job so striking is not just the suffering itself, but the honesty with which it is portrayed. There is no quick resolution, no tidy explanation, and no simple formula for making the pain stop. Instead, we are invited into a raw and real conversation about what it means to trust God when the ground beneath us gives way. Three common but ultimately insufficient responses to suffering are examined -- moralism, the idea that doing better will protect us from pain; cynicism, the abandonment of faith because nothing seems to make sense; and denialism, the impulse to minimize our hurt and pretend everything is fine. None of these serve us well. What Job models instead is something far more courageous: in the middle of catastrophic loss, he worships. He acknowledges that everything he had was a gift, not a guarantee. And in doing so, he finds that suffering, rather than driving him away from God, drives him deeper into God's presence.
